trouble andrew: blazin blunts & Canadian humour
this kid has heaps of style -not a style that I would rock but stylish nonetheless. trouble andrew is originally from Nova Scotia but seems he’s been on the west coast of Canada and around. this video about smoking blunts is hilarious. there is so much good music in Canada it’s ridiculous.
Nas & Jr. Gong – Land of Promise
remember Mossman in Countryman? a rasta killa with dreads. this tune below featuring the always poetic Nas and stylish Jr. Gong, has that baseline from the ASWAD song Promised Land -also featured as a dub track during the Mossman scenes in the classic film Countryman. Jamaica is so full of contradiction that I’ve grown to [...]
Dane Reynolds, anxiety, greed, stigma, and mental health
Dear Dane, self medicating with booze to calm anxiety works like a charm -that is until it doesn't. and the long term effects of booze are a motherfucker. you've read o'l Chinaski. you oughta know.

buju banton: rasta no deal wit’ babylon drug ting
Buju Banton came onto the American mainstream reggae scene with his 1995 rasta inspired ’till Shiloh. before that he was a dancehall DJ burnin batty man with tunes like Boom Bye Bye – a homophobic anthem not uncommon in Jamaican dancehall. ’till Shiloh was to be a rebirth for him, coming into his own as [...]

run for your life – or skate
yesterday, with no one to help me battle the BMX's at the bowl, I went for a run instead -exploring the rail road tracks and some sketchy dirt roads along the Halifax peninsula's north end - aka Africville. running for 45 minutes will sure as hell make any shred of self pity dissipate like a bong hit cloud.

poem: submariners and rum heads collide like daydreams in the night
this one goes out to all you sub-mariners and slackers,
and shiners, and surfers and lovers of all things,
and to those who said fuckit, and to those whose brains focused
like Leica lenses on the horizon of their futures,
missing the present like purgatorial paychecks.
Poem: really
confidence, like prayer flags in sunny south east Portland, blowing in the summer breeze. soon the clouds cover and they convalece, like old folks -forgetful of sunny days gone by. no not convalece, more like. convulse. like mongrels chocking on chicken bones in the yard and no one notices, and then I notice and with [...]
Pareto, style, hipsters and grit
Pareto’s law applies to a whole heap of things -if not all. 20% of effort creates 80% of results. so the point is (and I do use this here space to point shit out to myself), don’t sweat it. focus on the 20% of shit that matters. smack talkin detractors are waiting like vultures to [...]

the Beach Boys stole it all
in 1963 the beach boys recorded Surfin’ USA. turns out that Brian Wilson straight stole the melody and even the lyrical style from Chuck Berry’s Sweet Little Sixteen. later the rights to Surfin’ USA would be turned over to Chuck Berry – unbeknownst to Brian Wilson. too bad surfin can’t take its rightfully owned cultural [...]
electrip sheep and lost polaroids
do androids dream? we don’t know -yet. and what of misty monday mornings for the unemployeed? “You will be required to do wrong no matter where you go. It is the basic condition of life, to be required to violate your own identity.” Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, 177

sandy stretch: a crazy long bike adventure
a couple of years ago I met Matt at the beach. I was riding my log in some high tide little sliders and he was expertly doing the same on his 5’3″ bonzer. later we chatted on the boardwalk for a while about random things and mostly about bikes since Matt was riding a Surly [...]
these absurd times: a slow project
after my morning routine today I spent a little bit of time on VBS.Tv – Vice Magazine’s web space. it’s a place where I can waste a lot of time but also find a lot of inspiration, as Vice often finds interesting people doing things which often don’t have a mass appeal but are wholehearted [...]

john waters and heroes
before I head off to search for waves in the heavy fog I thought I’d post this most interesting list from John Waters on role models. 1 History. You can’t have a one-night-stand role model. No one can become a role model in 24 hours. It helps a lot if you knew them when you [...]
back to business as usual
Ok seems the last week or so has been a wee serious. too serious for someone trying to see the humour in things. so Imma change it up a little. nihlism is for the birds and physolophising ain’t much more than old piss in a beer bottle. action is where it’s at ain’t it? to [...]
surf, egos, and the illusion of control
in my last post I asked you to give me your opinion on my right to complain about ASP contests in my area and simply blogging about surfing. the responses were many and mostly positive. I had the opportunity to be completely disconnected from the interwebs for several days as I traveled to Northern Manitoba. [...]

O’Neil Coldwater Classic in Halifax?
found out today -by accident, that O’Neil is planning on hosting a 6 star contest in Halifax this fall. two years ago the guys tried hosting a contest here and the surf community vehemently opposed it. this time around there didn’t seem to be any community consultations -or at least no public community consultations. what [...]

Sion Milosky’s legacy
legacy is a word that’s played a lot of tricks on me. everything from wanting to be famous (absurd I know), to just wanting to be remembered kindly. recently the Hawaiian surfer died while surfing Mavericks in Northern California. the video below is a small tribute to Sion. it’s comprised of interviews with Sion’s friends [...]
